Delete your account

Carmen Guardian and Carmen Monitor are made by Backgrounder, Inc. They all use one Backgrounder account, so deleting it deletes it everywhere.

How to delete your account

In the Carmen Guardian app (iPhone or Android). Open Settings and tap Delete account, then confirm.

On the website. Sign in, open Settings, and choose Delete Account at the bottom of the page.

By email. If you cannot sign in, email support@backgrounder.com from the address on your account with the subject "Delete my account".

What happens next

1. You are signed out everywhere, and the apps stop capturing anything further for your account.
2. Your account is scheduled for permanent deletion 30 days later. Signing in again during those 30 days cancels the deletion.
3. After 30 days the account is permanently deleted.

What is deleted, and when

• Account and profile data (name, email, phone, sign-in credentials): deleted within 30 days of your request.
• Connected mailbox data (Gmail or Outlook, if you connected one): access is revoked, and email content we hold is permanently deleted within 90 days.
• Content you submitted for analysis (links, screenshots, files) and the verdicts and reports for it: kept for up to 180 days after deletion for legal compliance, then deleted.
• Payment records: Backgrounder does not store card details. Payment records are held by our payment processor, Stripe, under its own legal obligations.

What is kept

Scammer data — details that identify scammers, such as phone numbers, domains and payment accounts used in scams — is kept to protect other users. Your own personal information is removed from it.

Data on your own devices is not held by us. Uninstalling Carmen Guardian removes its data from your phone. In Carmen Monitor, choose Settings → Permissions & privacy → Your data rights → Delete local data, or remove the extension.

Deleting some data without deleting your account

• Disconnect a mailbox, or turn a kind of protection off, in the Carmen Guardian app's Settings.
• Turn off automatic site checks, or choose what Carmen sends, in the Carmen Monitor extension.
• Ask us to delete specific data by emailing support@backgrounder.com.
